
What the Jony Ive and Sam Altman conversation leaves us with — before we build anything, how do human beings actually express themselves and relate? Built on the conversation between Jony Ive and Sam Altman, hosted by Laurene Powell Jobs at Emerson Collective Demo Day 2025. Their remarks are restated in substance, not quoted. 01 The order of the questions decides the fate of the product Conversations about AI usually begin with the technology. How powerful will the model get, how much will agents take over, what shape will the next device take. What the two men on that stage actually did was invert the order. Laurene Powell Jobs described their meeting not as the birth of a product or a plan but as an alignment of intention. They did not open with “what product is native to AI.” They looked first at the relationship between people and nature, people and animals, people and each other. They studied what intelligence is, how tools have evolved, what we are willing to call a value. Read as a romantic gesture, this misses the point. The order of questions is not a matter of taste. It is structure, because a question fixes the range of answers before any answer arrives. Start from “what feature should we add” and you will ship a product with more features. Ask “how do we increase time spent” and human attention becomes a number to be optimized. Begin instead from “how do people remember, express themselves, and attend to one another,” and the place technology occupies changes entirely. Same team, same budget, same stack — a different opening question builds a different world. 02 The courage to delay the answer, and the inevitability that arrives late For Ive, an overly defined destination is not an aid to creation but a narrowing of the field. Once the endpoint is fixed, you sprint toward it without ever learning what you passed. What he named as the foundation of the work was not certainty but an appetite for inquiry that never quite fills. He and Altman connected quickly, he says, because the desire to learn ran stronger in both of them than the desire to be right. Curiosity here is not permissiveness. It is the discipline of holding a fragile, intuitive question inside a rigorous structure of research. His team spent months producing thick volumes on the history of form, the design of cameras, the way human relationships have shifted. None of it connected to a product yet. Then the first prototypes appeared and the loose threads locked into a single shape. To anyone meeting only the finished object, it looks as though it could never have been otherwise. The philosopher of technology Gilbert Simondon called this concretization. An immature technical object is abstract: a separate part bolted on for every function. A mature one lets a single element serve several functions at once until the interior becomes self-coherent. At that moment the thing stops looking invented and starts looking found. The essential point is that the inevitability was not there at the start. It is manufactured after the fact, by tolerating uncertainty long enough to filter out a great many wrong possibilities. Good design looks natural not because the process was simple, but because it absorbed the complexity on your behalf. 03 The structure of human expression includes silence Expression does not live only in speech and text. We disclose ourselves through gaze and gesture, distance and silence, choice and hesitation. Listening without interrupting, setting a device down while someone is with you, deciding what to record and what to leave to memory — all of it is expression. Ive notes that a healthy relationship is not defined by the volume of words exchanged. There is a silence you keep because you are genuinely curious what the other person will say, and that silence, socially awkward in one setting, is an expression of trust in another. This has a direct design consequence. Silence is not the absence of expression but the ground against which expression becomes visible. Remove the ground and the figure disappears with it. An interface that fills every gap looks generous; what it is actually doing is repossessing the space in which a person forms their own thought. Tools have always been rewriting this structure. The camera changed how we keep memory. The telephone extended the range of a voice. The smartphone gathered recording, communication, and discovery into one surface — and held our eyes and hands inside a small rectangle. Social media let almost anyone broadcast, and translated expression into the grammar of reactions and metrics. McLuhan’s old line lands exactly here: we shape our tools, and thereafter our tools shape us. So an AI that is always present The more it writes our words, does expression get richer or more uniform? The earlier it supplies an answer, do we think harder or lose the capacity to form a question? If it is always with us, do we understand each other better, or hand the machine the attention we used to give each other? Designing an AI device is not a matter of screen size and button placement. It is a decision about the shape human attention, agency, memory, and relationship will take from here. 04 Attention is not a resource. It is generosity. Altman compares the experience of today’s devices and apps to walking through Times Square: flashing light, constant notification, stimulus arriving from every direction. The technology got more capable; our minds did not get quieter. What he hopes for is the opposite sensation — closer to sitting in a cabin by a mountain lake. Read as an aesthetic preference, the contrast is trivial. Underneath it sits a decision about what attention is. Simone Weil called attention the rarest and purest form of generosity. To attend to someone is to empty part of your own world briefly and let them in. If that is true, a business that captures attention and converts it into revenue is not extracting a resource. It is extracting generosity. Heidegger argued that the danger of modern technology lies not in machines but in the way the world comes to show up as standing reserve — stock, available on demand. In the attention economy the stock is not a river or a coal seam. It is human hours. A sufficiently intelligent and trustworthy AI would not need to hand the user everything it knows. It could judge, in context, what to filter, when to stay quiet, when to surface something, when to ask. The clutter falls away not because the technology intervenes more, but because it understands more. The best AI product may not be the screen you cannot stop watching, but the tool that lets you look up from it and back at your life. 05 A tool that knows how to withdraw Ive says he cannot stand products that keep reminding you how hard the problem was. A great solution can hold enormous intelligence and still look almost naive in its simplicity. It does not intimidate, it invites the hand before the mind, and it declines to advertise itself. This is ontology, not styling. As Heidegger observed, a well-made hammer disappears from awareness while it is being used; the tool becomes conspicuous mainly when it breaks. Most software today is built to do the reverse — to keep reminding you it exists, to prove its value through interruption. Ivan Illich divided tools into two kinds: convivial ones that extend a person’s own capacity, and ones that manufacture dependence. The bicycle sits on one side; systems engineered around need sit on the other. AI devices are standing exactly at that fork. The argument is not for fewer features. It is against transferring internal complexity onto the person. If the system can understand and handle more, the human should face fewer interfaces, fewer alerts, fewer decisions. Knowing what to remove becomes as valuable as knowing what to add. Good design is not an inventory of what the technology can do. It is a judgment about which parts of the experience a human being should keep. 06 Joy is not decoration. It is a verdict. Before either team knew what they were building, Ive fixed one requirement: whatever it turned out to be, it had to make people smile. Altman says he assumed at first that what people wanted was efficiency. As the work took shape, he came to see how thoroughly joy, humor, and playfulness have drained out of contemporary technology products. The discourse around AI is full of fear and end-times. The real risks deserve their weight. But risk management alone does not produce a future anyone wants to live in. Safety is a floor, not a destination. And joy is not a sentimental line item. It is a diagnostic. If a person smiles after using something, that tool at minimum did not treat them as a means. If what remains after use is fatigue and self-reproach, the instrument has already given its reading. 07 And yet — calm is another word for authority That is the picture the conversation offers. Now it deserves pressure. An essay that leaves only admiration behind has skipped the test. First: an AI that shows less is an AI that judges more If the machine decides what to filter and when to stay quiet, the machine holds editorial power. Complexity removed from the screen has not vanished; it has moved somewhere you cannot see. You can audit a system that shows you ten notifications. It is much harder to audit one that silently discarded nine. Calm looks like modesty, but it can be the visible result of a larger claim to authority. So a technology that withdraws has to ship the mechanism for taking that authority back. Can you see what was filtered? Can you change the threshold? Can you reach the raw material when you need it? Without that, a quiet interface is just comfortable paternalism. Second: the promise to return attention can collide with the business model When an advertising business says it wants you to use it less, we discount the claim. A company earning from devices and subscriptions is relatively free of that tension — but only so far, and business models drift. The promise of calm technology is kept or broken by the P&L, not by taste. Which makes it something to observe over time rather than something to believe. Third: the same sensibility built the iPhone The designer describing a device that gives attention back also made the most beautiful attention-capture object in history. That is not an accusation. It is what makes the project interesting. Whether the same hand can run in the opposite direction is a genuinely open question. And open means testable. 08 A product is not an answer. It is a hypothesis. The capacity to build is becoming common property. As the cost of producing code, design, content, and analysis falls, speed stops being a differentiator. What differentiates is the ability to judge what deserves to exist, to say whose life it serves, and to test that judgment in real use. So a serious builder does not prove themselves by feature count. They observe, ask, and run something small. They watch how people actually respond, and change direction when the hypothesis fails. They produce not only an artifact but a claim about human life, along with the evidence that supports or undermines it. The product, on this view, is a hypothesis rather than a finished answer. And a hypothesis has to be falsifiable. The three objections above are useful precisely because they convert this project’s claims into testable ones. It is a refusal to reshape people around the speed and logic of machines, and a decision to reconsider what place technology should hold in a life. Which means that “what is possible?” is not enough as we design the next generation of devices and services. Six questions to ask before building Where does this send a person’s attention? Does it widen the room for independent thought, or narrow it? Does it make expression more truthful, or merely more uniform? Does it deepen relationships, or only multiply connections? Does it absorb complexity, or hand it back? After use, is what remains calm and joy? And beside each question belongs not an answer but the shape of the evidence. Unless you know what you would observe to settle it, six questions are just six slogans. The work before building is clear enough. Look closely at how people actually live. Understand how they disclose themselves in speech and in silence. Watch how tools extend a person and how they interrupt one. Rediscover the calm and joy hidden underneath the demand for efficiency. And stay beside the question no one else has had the patience to hold. What we should build is not technology that replaces the human being, but technology that returns a life, an attention, an expression, a relationship. And that claim, too, has to be checked against evidence.
