Mechanical Engineering Co-op/Intern (Spring 2027)

Join the Future of Robotic Biomanufacturing!

Multiply Labs is a robotics company on a mission to solve a significant bottleneck in modern medicine: the manufacturing of life-saving advanced biologics, from gene and cell therapies to antibodies and more.

Today, these therapies are produced through manual, labor-intensive processes. Costs are extremely high—often $500K–$2M per patient—limiting access to only a small fraction of those who need them.

As product complexity increases and the cost of failure and scientific labor rises, the industry is shifting toward automation. Robotics and AI are making automated biologics manufacturing feasible, reliable, and economically scalable.

We believe the future of biomanufacturing is robotic—closed, automated, and scalable—ensuring critical therapeutics are accessible to every patient who needs them.

Why This Matters

We don’t just build robots—we’re building the essential infrastructure for next-generation biologics. Our technology enables biopharma companies to scale production without redesigning their science, reducing regulatory hurdles and lowering costs so these treatments can reach more patients.

The Stack & the Scale

• The Mission: Build the world’s best robots to make life-saving therapies accessible to all.

• The Technology: Advanced robotic orchestration, high-precision automation, cloud-integrated hardware-software systems, dexterous manipulation, and imitation learning.

• The Location: Headquartered in San Francisco, CA.

• The Backing: Supported by premier investors, including Casdin Capital, Lux Capital, and Y Combinator.

About the Role

We are looking for a Mechanical Engineering Co-op/Intern to join our team in San Francisco for a full-time co-op/internship position starting in January 2027. You will apply your engineering skills to design robotic cartridges and consumables involved in the manufacturing of novel pharmaceutical products.

You’ll work directly with a cross-functional hardware and software team on designing and building the current and next generations of Multiply Labs’ robotic consumables. The work spans selecting and designing consumables, setting high-level design goals, building prototypes, and taking designs to production.

You’ll succeed in this role if you can optimize designs using first-principles engineering approaches. We run several projects at once, so you’ll need strong documentation skills and the ability to turn ideas into action. You’ll help drive decisions on major projects while coordinating with colleagues.

Responsibilities

Own consumable and robotic design projects

Investigate applicable technologies and components

Prototype, test, and iterate on designs

Create supporting design documentation, including 3D CAD models and detailed drawings

Qualifications

Currently working towards a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or a related field

Strong mechanical fundamentals, creative problem-solving, attention to detail, and communication skills

Ability to solve complex technical problems by breaking them down into simpler pieces and executable tasks

Experience with 3D CAD software (Onshape, SolidWorks, etc.), including modeling and creation of detailed drawings

Knowledge of mechanical components, common engineering metals, plastics, joining methods, part fabrication methods, and finishing operations

Understanding of design for manufacturing and assembly (DFM/DFA) principles

Highly motivated, independent, curious, and eager to learn

Additional preferred qualifications:

Experience iterating through design cycles from concept through production, including concept generation, downselection, rapid prototyping, testing, analysis, and manufacturing

Hands-on experience with machine shop and prototyping tools

Physical & Working Conditions

Ability to reach, stoop, crouch, and kneel, including entering and working inside a robotic cluster for maintenance, cleaning, or intervention

Ability to lift up to 25 lbs (equipment, parts, tools) and up to 5 lbs overhead

Manual dexterity to use hand tools, manage cabling, and perform mechanical adjustments

Work primarily in a manufacturing area adjacent to a lab; must follow strict safety protocols (e.g., BSL-2) and maintain situational awareness

Potential exposure to hazardous materials, including biological agents and cryogenics, while servicing equipment

Required use of PPE (lab coat, safety glasses, gloves) for extended periods

Flexible schedule, with occasional evenings or weekends for time-sensitive builds or testing

Total Rewards & Life at Multiply Labs

Competitive Compensation: $5,000/month.

Real Ownership: Own meaningful design projects on robots that go into production, not side tasks.

Mentorship: Work side by side with experienced mechanical, robotics, and software engineers.

Office Perks: An energetic SF office culture featuring catered team lunches, stocked kitchen, and frequent team events.

Great people, meaningful work, and a team that genuinely believes in what we’re building.

No Set Hours: Set your own schedule in alignment with your manager and team. We hold a high bar, measuring success by impact and outcomes—not hours logged.

Come build the world’s best robots—and help make life-saving therapies accessible to all.

We actively seek candidates with diverse perspectives and lived experiences. We’re committed to building a team where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered to do their best work.

Multiply Labs encourages candidates from all backgrounds to apply—even if you don’t meet every qualification. If you’re excited about our mission and think you can contribute, we’d love to hear from you.

Our headquarters is located in San Francisco’s vibrant Dogpatch neighborhood.
