How do Instagram and Amazon actually decide the order of the search results they show you? The full proprietary algorithms used by these platforms are extremely complex and far beyond the scope of this paper. However, we can simplify the question in an interesting way: if we ranked the same items using only basic statistical primitives - such as simple average rating, z-score (frequentist approach), and Local False Discovery Rate (Bayesian approach) - how similar or different would the rankings be? What are the strengths and biases of each method? This statistics and data-science project explores those questions through a real-world example: the sorting of a dataset of ~4,900 recipe reviews.
