About the company
A newly founded, seed-stage AI startup in San Francisco building one platform for geospatial analysis: satellite imagery, remote sensing data, maps, and other large spatial datasets.
Today that work is spread across disconnected GIS tools and specialist teams, and the company wants to put serious spatial analysis within reach of far more organizations through AI-driven software.
It closed a solid seed round, is building its product and technical foundation from scratch, and has several founding-level seats open at the same time. The role You'll be the company's first product hire, working directly with the founders, the engineers, and the earliest customers.
There is no roadmap, no product team, and no process yet. You'll decide which customer problems are worth solving first, turn new AI and geospatial capabilities into products people rely on, and put in place the product habits the team will run on as it grows.
Expect your week to swing between sitting with a geospatial analyst to learn how they actually work and reviewing a prototype with an engineer. What you'll do
- Spend a large share of your time with users and prospects to set product strategy, focusing on where the platform can be dramatically better than current geospatial workflows
- Spot the patterns across use cases in different industries and turn them into general approaches to spatial questions, so the platform doesn't splinter into custom one-offs
- Build close working relationships with design partners and early customers, and convert their loosely defined problems into products they rely on
- Design the workflows, interfaces, and abstractions that sit between users and the underlying AI and geospatial systems
- Partner with engineering from problem framing through release: prototype, weigh tradeoffs, write specs where they help, and decide what to build now versus later, often with incomplete information
- Run prioritization and build the loop that ties customer usage, experiments, conversations, and product telemetry back to what gets built next
What you must bring
- 6+ years in product roles
- A record of taking technically complex products from an unclear starting point to something customers value, either at an early-stage startup or on a team with a high degree of autonomy
- Product judgment that weighs customer needs, technical options, and business realities together as one decision, not three separate ones
- Enough technical depth to work through APIs, data infrastructure, models, latency, reliability, and tradeoffs with engineers (you won't be writing production code)
- Real hands-on time building with or around modern AI systems, and clear views on where AI adds product value and where it doesn't
- Strong customer discovery skills: you get past the feature request to the real problem, and you can tell which problems need solving now and which can wait
- Ability to work full-time, in person, in San Francisco
Nice to have
- Product experience in satellite imagery, remote sensing, Earth observation, or other geospatial technology
- A background in AI or ML platforms, AI-native apps, developer tools, data infrastructure, or scientific software
- Time in industries built around understanding the physical world, such as defense, intelligence, climate, energy, logistics, insurance, or agriculture
- Experience in a forward-deployed or discovery-heavy role at a fast-moving startup
Compensation & logistics
- $175K to $300K base salary
- Meals provided in the office
- Full-time and fully in person in San Francisco, CA
- Not open to visa sponsorship. Candidates must already be authorized to work in the US
This isn't the right fit if
- You want an existing roadmap, product team, or established process to step into
- You'd rather work from other people's research than talk with customers directly
- You haven't spent real time building with modern AI systems
- You're looking for a remote or hybrid arrangement
